If waste water treatment systems are not functioning as required, the water may end up in the surface and groundwater. In order to improve the situation, the state and functioning of the waste water treatment systems on the plots in the area is assessed to determine the current situation and examine the need for investments into renovation of the systems. For this purpose, a survey will be conducted among the residents of Ida-Viru and Lääne-Viru Counties who live in villages of up to fifty people. More attention is also paid to the waste water treatment plants and waste water discharges or the industries and settlements.

As a result of the survey, a database of the water treatment systems used in single households will be created, which is an important and necessary tool for advising and instructing the owners. It will also be useful in the construction or reconstruction of single waste water treatment systems in order to ensure proper treatment of waste water.

The project is funded by the European Commission LIFE programme and the Republic of Estonia. The LIFE programme is a financial instrument of the European Commission which has been used for funding environmental projects in the European Union for over twenty years. It is the only environment-focused instrument which supports the development and implementation of the EU environmental policy.
